Taman Ujung Water Palace: A Landmark Steeped in History
Taman Ujung Water Palace is a sprawling park that covers approximately 10 hectares of land, situated roughly 11 km southeast of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem. Its origins date back to 1919, during the reign of the esteemed ruler Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, also known as I Gusti Bagus Djelantik.
Initially, the complex consisted of a single pool called Kolam Dirah, built in 1901 during the reign of the previous raja of Karangasem. The pool was used to punish individuals accused of practicing black magic or Balinese witchcraft, referred to as pangiwa and leyaks. The southeast corner of the present layout still features the Dirah pool, named after the witch queen of the Calonarang legend.
Over time, the complex underwent several expansions and pool additions, as well as the construction of resting pavilions, meditation quarters, and floating pavilions known as Taman Gili. These additions transformed the complex into a retreat and a place to receive dignitaries visiting the Karangasem kingdom.
